‘some if’s’, a Poem by Féilim James

if

my demons had faces what would they

a thousand spiders

the insides of bodies

the facial expressions i wear when i weep

if

my demons had hands what would they

withered and grey

scarlet throbbing

raptorclaws bristling with violence

if

my demons had names what would they

skolforp minkmank

conqwuanch fumpfoot

terrence

if

my demons were features of the natural world what would they

sheer rock face

shimmerhot desert air

lone iceberg

if

my demons were human constructions what would they

home never used

falling bridge

rural tower empty for centuries

if

my demons were         possessed

if

my demons had form

then this task might be easier

alas they are nothing but

this stern brow

this mind

animal matter

ticking and grinding and

grinding and grinding and grinding
